Nurse Manager - Firefighter Burn Unit



The nurse manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations and leadership of Firefighter Burn Unit. The incumbent is accountable for the quality of services and works closely with the director and providers to manage labor and operational budget, clinical outcomes and efficiency. The Manager collaborates and leads unit-based nursing practice, quality, and systems improvements through innovation, technology management, ethics, and evidence-based research. Supports staff recruitment and retention efforts. Embraces the organizational strategic vision, premier behaviors and cultural beliefs for high quality, patient-centered care.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to build and lead teams. He/she will balance vision with a hands-on approach and will be comfortable driving optimal results independently, as well as with and through others. Education Requirement:

Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing required. Master’s degree preferred.

Experience Requirement:

Three (3) years of progressive clinical/nursing management/ supervisory experience required.

Licensure/Certification Requirement:

Current license to work as a Registered Nurse in the State of Tennessee required. Current CPR/BLS/ACLS certification required.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Apprises Director of all activities, pertinent changes in internal/external markets, threats, and opportunities in a timely and anticipatory manner and presents action plans for immediate implementation/approval.
  • Maintains current awareness of customer needs and meets standards and requirements applicable to assigned area(s). Assists Director in the development of policies, procedures and standards related to performance requirements for assigned staff.
  • Participates in and supports the development, implementation, and evaluation of unit goals, objectives, policies/procedures, and standards of care related to professional/patient care practices and patient outcomes.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to patient needs. Provides clinical expertise and management support to the staff in the delivery of patient care in compliance with defined standards. Ensures compliance with applicable policies, standards, hospital bylaws, and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrates an effective working relationship with the medical staff, health care team, patients, family members, and visitors. Ensures prompt and effective problem resolution.
  • Assists in establishing, analyzing and communicating appropriate quality standards for designated services and programs. Investigates and tracks incident reports. Follows up on patient/physician complaints.
  • Initiates/attends cross-functional teams to resolve issues and for performance improvement as required. Represents the department through involvement on interdepartmental and interdisciplinary committees or task forces.
  • Plans, implements and manages unit activities to effectively and efficiently provide quality nursing and patient care services.
  • Manages day-to-day operations/problem-solving and implements new or revised programs and/or services.
  • Responsible for ensuring cases are completed in a manner that is accurate, quality and patient centered and timely. Schedules, assigns and distributes duties among assigned employees. Collaborates with the Administrative staff and PCCs to provide appropriate staff placement based on productivity standards required to meet the clinical needs of the patients.
  • Ensures that staff works in collaboration with other disciplines, physicians, health care team members, and external healthcare organizations for hospitalization needs according to the patient’s plan of care.
  • Manages the financial resources of assigned areas of responsibility. Monitors operating revenues and expenses, administer established cost control program, monitors budget variances and reports significant variances to the Director.
  • Makes changes and recommendations as needed to enhance/improve services and efficiency with in the assigned unit.
  • Ensures accurate charge capture for services provided and effectively allocates resources to meet unit needs.
  • Monitors the documentation of required information in patient records according to hospital policies and procedures and nursing standards of practice.
  • Performs RN duties as required. Provides nursing care and implement plan of care according to medical regime and the nursing intervention appropriate for the patients' conditions and consistent with patient care policies and procedures, demonstrated competencies, and with consideration given to risk management, infection control practices and patient safety practices.
  • Implements and monitors system measurements to ensure delivery of quality patient care.
  • Makes rounds and provides managerial presence to ensure planned or required care is being provided to patients.
  • Ensures compliance with joint commission standards for nursing care, hospital policies and procedures, compliance/performance improvement, safety, infection control, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Coaches staff in the resolution of problems, use of resources and the use of the nursing process.
  • Ensures resource materials are available on the unit.
  • Updates and maintains a written unit specific PI plan.
  • Collects data and reports to unit PI results with a written plan.
  • Ensures that staff understands and is involved with implementation and evaluation of unit based PI plan.
  • Provides leadership in the development and evaluation of standards of care.
  • Utilizes manual and automated information systems to improve efficiency and effect productivity.
  • Works collaboratively with nursing/medical/hospital staff, patients and external agencies in a customer responsive/professional manner in compliance with Regional One standards to promote patient/customer satisfaction.
  • Provides assistance to develop, coordinate, and ensure implementation of services; daily oversight of operations, including financial functions; and maintain accountability of all unit functions.
  • Prepares and maintains required reports, records and files for administrative and operational purposes.
  • Utilizes computer and information systems to enter, format data and generates statistics, computations, tables, charts and graphs.
  • Aggregates and analyzes population-specific data to assist with the identification of potential problems, patterns, and trends,
  • Reports trends in data which reflect system issues, establishes priorities and recommends improvement activities to Director and/or other responsible parties.
  • Plans work schedules, assigns work and monitors workflow to provide adequate support/services at all times through individual or cooperative activities.
  • Demonstrates effective management of staffing resources by providing for appropriate nursing skill mix and number of staff for service.
  • Effectively makes work assignments, delegates responsibilities, sets priorities and redirects employees to other tasks as the need arises.
  • Reviews work of staff to ensure quality in all job duties.
  • Ensures staff meets job demands and productivity levels.
  • Manages activities of employees. Develops and motivates direct reports to ensure that a capable, competent staff exists in the department.
  • Responsible for selecting staff. Orients, trains and develops staff to meet requirements set forth in department plan.
  • Identifies competencies requiring review/updating/annual testing.
  • Provides in-services and training opportunities for staff.
  • Supports staff in development and implementation of their individualized professional development plans.
  • Evaluates performance and initiates corrective action as required.
  • Fosters a safe environment for staff to expand in their application of care practices, teamwork skills and accountability for organizational goals.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient, department and hospital information. Adheres to established department and organizational policies in processing and releasing patient information (i.e. HIPAA, Confidentiality, and Compliance Policies.
  • Prepares operating budget and is responsible for adherence to approved budget. Utilizes defined procedures to allocate resources such as FTEs, supplies and inventory. Monitor performance of support staff in the ordering, inventory, cleaning and maintenance of equipment for the department. Communicate with vendors concerning equipment as necessary.
  • Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements to maintain knowledge of best practices, current trends and developments in nursing and patient care services. Responds to problems/opportunities to improve work environment and participates in unit based performance improvement activities.
  • Maintains clinical competence commensurate to areas of responsibility.
  • Attends in-services, educational programs, conferences and other meetings as required.
  • Supports the organization’s Performance Improvement initiatives. Participates in activities both unit-based and hospital-wide to maintain or improve quality of patient care. Assists with development and implementation of approved plan. Completes assigned monitors and adheres to standards of practice. Utilizes quality indicators to improve clinical practices.
  • Coordinates and integrates unit activities with other disciplines to maximize overall effectiveness of the department.
  • Demonstrated technical, interpersonal and critical thinking skills with a thorough knowledge/understanding of professional nursing/patient care practices, State/Joint Commission standards and other regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills and ability to develop, present, implement and maintain activities within assigned program or organizational unit(s).

Supervision Provided by this Job:
  • Responsible for the management of assigned staff.
Physical Demands/Conditions:

Prolonged standing and walking; lifting, turning patients and equipment; repeated bending, squatting and stooping; exposure to infectious agents. Visual acuity is needed to assess color changes, to verify accuracy of written materials, and to administer and accurately prepare medications. Heavy Work - Exerting up to 150 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 75 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 30 pounds of force constantly to move objects. (May be further defined as "with or without assistance.") Must be willing to travel occasionally to conduct classroom presentations, attend recruitment fairs, etc
